The Challenge
While performing routine website maintenance for Summit Defense, Northern California’s largest criminal defense law firm, I discovered their website had been silently compromised.
Malicious files were hidden on the server, and thousands of spammy URLs (mostly promoting Russian dress shoes) had been indexed in Google, threatening both their brand reputation and SEO performance.
The client had no idea it had happened.
What I Did
- Identified and confirmed malware files via FTP
- Removed all malicious scripts from the server
- Migrated the site to a more secure, reputable hosting provider
- Located and documented 1,000s of fake URLs appearing in search results
- Submitted URL removal requests through Google Search Console
- Monitored index and SERP activity for 6+ months to ensure recovery
- Maintained communication with the client to keep them informed and reassured
Results
- All ghost URLs were deindexed from Google
- Site fully cleaned and running on a safer, faster host
- No reinfections or suspicious activity reported during monitoring
